Our Story
We genuinely and passionately believe in the need for a rapid global energy transition to carbon neutral and carbon negative energy.
Our collective experience already spans more than 50 years in the UK renewables sector and Voltaria is here to actively negate the effects of climate change.
The RIC partners had been watching the flexible energy markets with interest for a number of years and in 2021 concluded that the market had developed sufficiently to provide a real opportunity to contribute to expanding the UK flexible energy sector.
As a result in 2021 Voltaria was founded. RIC found a like-minded approach in Nigel Jefferson's vision for contributing to UK Net Zero and enthusiastically welcomed him to lead the journey as CEO.
We all believe that batteries are a crucial element of the UK renewables infrastructure mix and are required to facilitate much higher proportions of intermittent wind and solar electricity generation. This infrastructure is what will really enable the UK to achieve its Net Zero targets as soon as possible. Without flexible energy storage, no amount of intermittent renewable generation can satisfy the UK’s energy requirements.
We are committed to both developing viable battery projects and also to delivering and operating the batteries in the electricity market to maximise Voltaria’s energy transition impact.
Meet the Voltaria Team
CEO
Nigel Jefferson
Nigel joined Voltaria in April 2021 from Sembcorp Energy's Australian investment, Vellocet Clean Energy’s where he was Chief Operating Officer providing battery/solar microgrids in Victoria.
Prior to this he was Programme Director with both UK Power Reserve and then on acquisition with Sembcorp Energy UK. During this period he delivered over 500 MW of distributed generation sites, including battery energy storage projects, which were part of a 120 MW portfolio - at the time one of the largest transacted battery portfolios of its kind in the UK / Europe.
Previous to joining the energy sector Nigel served a full career in the British Army during which time he held organisational, project and programme leadership roles.
Projects Director
David Bowman
David has been leading the delivery of projects for Voltaria as Projects Director through his project management company RJ International Ltd since 2025.
David has been a dedicated power generation specialist for his entire career with substantial experience in project construction & delivery for flexible energy generation projects including gas peaking plants and grid scale BESS.
Over 1GWHr of total UK BESS delivery experience across more than 20 projects.
RJ International is also working on other projects outside of the Voltaria portfolio
Project Manager
Mark Roberts
Mark has been providing project management services to Voltaria through RJ International Ltd since 2025, with an initial focus on the construction of Voltaria's 43MW BESS project in Falkirk.
Mark started his career as an electrical engineer, then moving on to work as project manager at GMI Energy, ATG Airports and more recently N-ERGY Power Solutions from 2016 where he delivered flexible generation & BESS sites.
Most recently Mark held positions at Ylem Energy and Queequeg Renewables with a focus specifically on delivering BESS projects.
RJ International is also working on other projects outside of the Voltaria portfolio
Finance Lead
Zubair Adam
Zubair joined the Voltaria team in April 2025 having previously worked with members of the Board in other roles.
Zubair is an experienced finance professional, having worked within projects based organisations for the last 15 years and within the sustainable energy sector for the past ten years.
Zubair holds a BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance from the University of Northampton and a Fellow Membership with the ACCA.

Waqas Rasheed
Waqas joined the Voltaria team in April 2025 having previously worked with members of the Board in other roles.
Waqas is an experienced finance professional, having worked within energy projects based organisations for the last 10 years years.
Waqas holds a ACCA qualification in Accounting and Finance
Non-Executive Director
Will Temple
Managing Partner of RIC and Co-Founder of Voltaria. Over 20 years’ experience in renewable energy investment, project development, project contracting and structuring.
Started private equity investing in the renewables sector in 2003. Experience includes investment and raising capital for, and development of assets in wind, energy-from-waste, recycling, carbon products and waste management across the UK, Middle East and North America.
Will has now been involved in the UK battery energy storage market for four years as a result of supporting the management to build the Voltaria business, providing deep commercial insight into the value proposition for investment in UK energy storage.
Non-Executive Director
Stefan Schmitz
Partner of RIC and Co-Founder of Voltaria. Over 25 years of experience in renewable energy contracts and structuring.
Project finance lawyer & formerly a Partner in the Project Finance team at Reed Smith in London.
Stefan has advised on all aspects of project and investment documentation for renewables, sustainability and energy transition projects, from development stage through to sale, construction and offtake.
Associate
George Hutchinson
George initially joined RIC as an MBA intern. Having completed his MBA at IESE Business School in Barcelona during summer 2025 he subsequently joined RIC in a full time role.
George is a Chartered Accountant by background, spending 4 years with Deloitte in London. Following this he had 4 years experience in Investment Management, with a focus on renewables (C&I solar and BESS) and UK energy markets including C&I solar and BESS deployment.
